What Is Actually True
- Missouri State Parks says Robert M. Snyder, a wealthy Kansas City businessman, planned a European-style castle with 60 rooms, and work began in 1905.
- Work stopped a year later after Snyder died in one of the state’s first automobile accidents; his sons finished it in 1922, less elaborately than planned.
- The page says that in 1942 sparks from a chimney ignited the roof and the fire gutted the castle, and the carriage house burned the same day.
- Vandals burned the water tower in 1976, and the park was created in 1978.
- We found no source for a “curse,” so we leave it out.
